Book Review – “I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More!”

“I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More!” (affiliate link) written by Karen Beaumont and illustrated by David Catrow is a book about a little boy who loves to paint and not the typical paint on paper type of painting but instead loves to paint walls, himself and his dog which of course his mama doesn’t appreciate!  The illustrations of the setting and the characters are done mostly in black and white and then the child’s paint is done in a vibrant watercolor effect which is quite a visual masterpiece. I actually hadn’t noticed until today, but the first page of the book includes a completely white canvas sitting on an easel amidst all the paint on the walls.  That’s not the only humor in this story.  It’s filled with rhymes of what he’s going to paint  next and my favorite line is, “But I’m such a nut, gonna paint my – WHAT?! Y’all don’t faint…’cause there ain’t no paint! So I ain’t gonna paint no more!”  Another wonderful element is that the illustrations offer a visual clue as to what he might paint next which helps create a visual flow along with the text that moves you rhythmically from one page to the next.  This book is an enjoyable read for children as well as adults and is full of literary value and wonderful illustrations provided by David Catrow.  I would definitely recommend this book!

After reading this book with my little we decided to trace the outline of her body on a roll of white paper and then went crazy painting her outline.  Click here to check it out!
