After reading the story “Good Night, Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann your little one(s) are sure to enjoy the opportunity to color (fine motor) their own puppets, cut them out (possibly with help from you) and then retell the story (language & literacy, cognitive) solo or teamed up with other children (social-emotional) as you watch on.

I’ve included cages and the zookeeper’s home (created by Ana C. Wydeven) for use in creating the story setting.  You could color these, laminate, and either adhere scratchy Velcro pieces to the back for use on a felt board or simply glue them on to a poster board.

  1. Print out Stick Puppet pages ("setting" pages are optional)
  2. Let your little one(s) color the pages
  3. Cut around the pictures (or let them cut - depending on their skill level)
  4. Laminate if desired
  5. Tape pictures onto popsicle sticks
  6. Optional - create the story setting (see "Tips" above)

If you have several children or people (mom, dad, grandma, aunt, friend, etc.) you can assign different roles including the performer(s), reader(s) and audience member(s).  I know there  isn’t much text to this story but don’t be afraid to get creative with animal noises or sound effects and background music to keep things interesting! (Don’t forget to switch roles!)  This is such a great way to work on so many different language and literacy skills as well as social-emotional skills due to all the problem solving and negotiating that is bound to arise!

I have also included color versions of the images as an alternative.  These would      probably be best laminated.  Then you could either place magnetic pieces on the back of each image (for use with magnetic dry erase boards) or add the scratchy Velcro pieces to the back (so that they can be used on felt boards).

Stick puppets also do very well with play dough.  I recommend making green play dough for the grass and then you can play around with retelling the story or just have fun with free play.  You could also challenge your child’s memory skills by asking them to arrange the animals in the order that the gorilla freed them from their cages!

Another extension that requires a bit more preparation is labeling cups (or some other sort of container) with either a word or beginning letter (such as A, E, G, H, J, L & M).  Then you can sort the puppets into their correct container.  I prefer using plastic cups, cutting a slit in the bottom and turning them upside down so that the puppets actually stand up.
