Read & Find is an absolutely perfect one-on-one activity to follow a reading of “Good Night, Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann. With parent or teacher guidance have the child retell (language) the story by following along the strips with their finger left to right (literacy). Before opening the cage door (physical) challenge the child to remember (cognitive) which animal is inside.

You may want to print this on cardstock paper to give it more durability as well as laminating it.  When taping the “cages” onto the Read & Find page I recommend using 2 pieces of tape for each flap (one for the top of the flap and one for the underside) so that it creates a fairly secure “hinge”.

  1. Print the Read & Find page as well as the Cages page (laminate if desired)
  2. Cut out the different colored cages
  3. Tape the matching colored cages onto the Read & Find page (see “Tips” above)

  1. Using the Read & Find page as a guide have the child retell the story by following along the strips with their finger left to right and top to bottom
  2. Before opening the cage door challenge them to remember which animal is inside then let them check to see whether they were correct.

While they are “reading” the Read & Find page it can be beneficial to have the book handy.  This way your child can refer back to it if needed.  Plus, it helps them see themselves as a “reader” which can be a definite self-esteem and confidence booster.

Add in some more fine motor skill building by having them draw a picture of what comes next in the story after the sixth animal (the armadillo) is released from it’s cage.  This is a great  opportunity for you to write down what they say and then pair the picture with their dictation.  Not only can it help them see that print carries meaning, but it also shows them that what they have to say is important.

Keeping with the “find it” theme you might want to try a game of “What’s Missing?” You can use zoo animal figurines (if you have them), some of my “chips” (from Good Night, Gorilla -  Collect 10 Board Game or Mat Game) or simply print out another Read & Find page and cut out the animals in the boxes.  You’ll also want a small hand towel or blanket large enough to cover all of the objects underneath it.  Then you will lay out the animals in front of your child(ren) and review what the animals are called.  Afterwards you will cover the blanket over the objects and remove one of the objects “magically” (yes, I even say: ABRACADABRA!) as you pull the cloth away and ask, “What’s Missing?” Then you’re children will excitedly call out what animal is missing!

You can use as few or as many objects as you’d like depending on your child’s ability and can remove more than one item at a time for a greater challenge.  I like to throw in some subtraction play by commenting on how many are missing.  Such as: “Oh my gosh!  There were 6 animals, but now there’s only 4!  How many are missing?
