This is a wonderful story time activity that requires a magnetic surface.  I prefer to complete this activity while I am reading the story “Good Night, Gorilla” (literacy) but it can also be used as a follow-up activity in a small group (social-emotional) or individually.  This activity does a great job encouraging children to think symbolically and build memory skills (cognitive).

I bought a rectangular pan from the dollar store and it works perfect for this!  I also prefer using adhesive magnetic tape (verses the small dots) for this activity and printing the pages on cardstock as well as laminating them for extra durability and longevity.  If you plan on using this for a larger group (more than 6 kids) I recommend cutting the Story Strips in half or in thirds such as (1) the ordinal number w/ the gorilla (2) key (3) animal “chip”.

  1. Print the 1st-6th and Story Strips pages (preferably on cardstock) and laminate (if desired)
  2. Tape the 1st-6th page to your magnetic surface (such as a cookie sheet)
  3. Cut out the Story Strips along the dashed line  and adhere your magnets to the back of each strip (if you plan on using this in a large group see “Tips” above)
  4. To play either pass out the Story Strips (for group) or place in a pile (for individual use) then one-by-one place the strips onto the 1st-6th page in the correct order

If you are doing this with a group of children and have passed out the Story Strip pieces you can add in some physical movement time by asking them to arrange themselves in a line in the order of the story.  Once they’re in order have them sit down in a line and read the story to see if they’re correct!

For those of you who are doing this with only one child you can still incorporate some movement by writing the ordinal numbers on 6 pieces of painters tape. Place them on the floor in a line (one staggered at least two feet after the      other).  Then sit  back a little ways with the Story Strips and hand them to your child one at a time.  (That way they’re moving back and forth and getting some extra movement in.)  You could also direct them (or let them choose) a different way to travel with each strip (hop, jump, etc.).

Another option is to have the child(ren) move around the room acting like the different animals in the story.  Example: “First, in order to become a gorilla we clench our fists and stretch out our arms towards the floor.  Then we walk on our knuckles as we move across the floor.”  Think of all the wonderful descriptive language you can use here and how they’ll need to focus to follow directions!

This would be a wonderful time to take a field trip to the zoo.  You can at least watch some video clips to see how the animals move.   The San Diego Zoo has a great website for kids (kids.sandiegozoo.org) where you can view videos and animal cams.
