This activity, as with most play dough activities, is great for strengthening fine motor muscles (physical) and because of its open-ended nature it can often result in hours of play (aka “learning”).  These Letter Mats will open the door to incorporating letter recognition (literacy), counting and patterning (cognitive) into their play dough fun.

I suggest playing right alongside your child and using your own mat.  If you want to focus on one letter at a time be sure to print out enough of the same mats so that each child and parent (or teacher, care giver, etc.) has their own.  By only using one mat you could  focus your attention on sharing and working together (which are important social-emotional skills).

  1. Print out Play Dough Letter Mat pages
  2. Place the pages into page protectors (or laminate)
  3. Set mat(s) out on table and talk about what you see (letter, image, colors, patterns, etc.)
  4. Bring out the play dough and show your little one(s) how to roll it into a snake
  5. Use the rolled out dough to form the letters on the mats

To incorporate math try rolling  out 20 little balls of play dough (about an inch in diameter), have your little one help if they’re willing.  Create 4 rows of 5 balls and count out loud the total to confirm that you have 20.  Then ask them to place balls on top of a specific colored image around the border.  EXAMPLE: For the letter ‘B’ mat ask them if they can place balls on top of all the yellow bananas first and then the white bananas second.  (This works on following oral directions and number sequence.)

A much loved variation of this is to stop after you completely covered the first set of  images and have your child use their fist, a hammer, or their palm, to flatten each ball of play dough while you count out loud with each pound they make.  (If you want to work on social-emotional skills you can take turns pounding.) Then write down the total (they can help you if they’re interested).  Next, cover the remaining images with the play dough balls and pound each ball while counting then compare the totals.  Ask, “Which color had the most?“  If they need a visual you can always peel off the flattened balls and arrange them in two rows or columns (one for the white images and one row for the colored images) to compare which has the most.

When talking about the patterns around the border of the Letter Mats I would suggest using a verbal strategy that my previous education coordinator shared with me.  Instead of  saying, “White, blue, white, blue…”  say, “White, blue AND white, blue...”  I even include a prolonged pause after “and”.  It really seems to help children break the pattern into parts that they can then recreate on their own.

To add a bit of silliness create your own pattern “song” which is basically repeating what I said above but adding in your own melody.  Then encourage your little(s) to sing their own pattern song based off of the images or colors around the border of their Letter Mat.
